So I flew out there, hung out with the band. [laughs] Youve gotta print my response. Much like a lot of people are. And so[sigh]Ive tried to maintain that thats just not what theyre for. I just wanna quit. To the average person, they just don t like drum solos. I mean, this last year, I had a whole year off, and I kinda went buggy. His playing always has a bit of a flair to it, but I think he's always a supportive musician and he doesn't overplay. Because I thought that we were big already, that we didnt need a video game. There was a time that the press, and especially Rolling Stone, decided to call usand by us I mean Foreigner, Journey, Styxthey called us faceless bands. It was through the Beatles that they started moving records across the ocean faster . l went down there and found it to be great. I like the idea of a drum kit, meaning that when you hit something, you have a percussive feel. In 1974 after having recorded twelve albums in two years Aynsley was acclaimed by the music industry as the world's leading session musician. Would you ever be interested in doing regular studio work, such as commercials? We did get a little bit trendy in spots, we all occasionally got a bit funny with our dressing, but we did not follow the New Wave thing, or the punk thing. See, if you price yourself as an average session man," you get every Tom, Dick and Harry calling you up for sessions, and I'm not into doing just anybody's session. But they didnt have any quote hit records, and werent on the radio much. Yknow? We were all lovin it. Because it was such an amazing use. And we wrote the record. Well, he did the same thing, way before we did! The video is a one-camera move. And it took a few more months, until October, and then I was ready, and found the right doctor for me. I could go out and I could have eight, nine, ten vodkas, and then I wouldnt drink for another three or four days. Sopranos! Its like, What the fuck? It was unbelievably cool. Do you find that the smaller drums give more "punch"? The remaining members of Jefferson Starship rebuilt the band in early 1979, adding drummer Aynsley Dunbar in January and vocalist Mickey Thomas in April. Its no different. At some point, in all our lives, wed all contributed to that star on the ground. What happened was, I was in Los Angeles, trying to get signed, with a band that I was in at the timeit was called the Alien Project, but it was also called Street Talk. I've been collecting material for it. lt made it really hard to keep up with the jazz. So that was a big part of the pressure? And it was all based around Steve giving us a call and saying Okay, Im fine now, Im ready to go. And it just didnt happen. You understand what Im saying? And their friend was kind of hovering over them with a camera. Anybody who plays in a group must realize that everybody in the group must always be aware of everybody else. I played with him for nearly three years and had a great time. It was crazy. But Im just not in it for the money. That was one of the most cathartic and painful and wonderful experiences Ive ever had, to go through the entire catalog, all the B-sides of albums that Id forgotten about, and remember everything about the sessions, and remember the writing of em, the struggles, the accomplishments. When somebody says, Weve checked out a few singers, its like your wifes saying, Look, while you were goneI know a few guys, and I just wanna know what youve decided to do, because I need to know. My feeling at that point is very simple: What am I going back to now? In England, at that time, American records were about four years behind. So I'm up there playing away and I decided it was time l finished, and all of a sudden. I like to do studio work for people who want me-where they respect what I'm doing and why. I want out. Every song the band did lasted about 25 minutes, and they were all the same structure head; solos; head. Then one day a few years later it would finally turn up. But when I went through Liverpool on a tour with Zappa in 1971, out of all the people I knew in Liverpool, he was the only one who actually turned up backstage to shake my hand and say how well I was playing. And then the second song we wrote, I was downstairs in Gregg Rolies house, where I was living, in Mill Valley, and Perry was over, and we were sittin down in the beanbags in the music room, and he started singin me these melodies that he had, for Lights. And I just started putting the stumble to it, felt like it was gonna be a stumble, and tried to give it some Hendrix-y type chords, to make it sound cool, and then I added a bridge to that, for a guitar solo, and that one was done, in about ten minutes. It's easy to keep going at a high level of intensity for a four- minute solo, and just go through fast and end it. He was the drummer for eleven Frank Zappa albums. AD: When Craig writes a song, he will actually make a demo tape with a drum track on it, which is great because it gives me ideas. I was kind of surprised. He was!. So when I hit the scene in Liverpool, I startled a lot of the drummers that were hanging around, because they hadn't heard of me and all of a sudden I was getting gigs and playing over the place. **. I just needed to stop. So he said, "Well, If that's the case, I guess we don't need you in our organization." You cant bust me for steroids, but youre gonna bust me for perjuryI get it! And so now Ive been sober for the last nine months, and I never want to look back. I mean, its in my blood, yknow? They were of the generation we were speaking of earlier, that newer generation of fans. And occasionally when I get up to Los Angeles, sometimes Ill go out on the weekend, and some of these clubs, manthis new generation in the clubs, man, theyre playing this song, and when it comes on theyre screaming it out to each other. No. It's something I was thinking about, but it is to the point where it sounds like everybody's done it all with what's there. So I left them and was out of work for two weeks, which was the longest 1 had ever been out of work. In my mind, he cracked the stone when he went out and did our stuff without us. Hes saying, yknow, If these guys wanna go on, I think they should just start something new and not use the Journey name. Dont crack the stone is what he kept on saying. But if you're backing up a soloist, the fill you played on the record might not get behind what he's doing on stage at that particular moment, because he's doing something different. Then I listened to Billy Cobham on the Spectrum album, and I like what he was doing. Never go as a musician because it doesn't work. Lets go fuckin be Journey again. I wouldnt have done that if I had any desire to leave the group. AD: I started playing violin when I was nine. Are you unhappy that the other guys in the band are still out there performing this music? I had no desire to. RM: I was listening to your Starship recordings, and then I listened to the records you did with Zappa ten years ago I notice that you play a lot of notes with Zappa. I find that now, though, even when I push myself, I don't have to go into overdrive. Theres a heavy jazz-fusion influence, and none of the songs are as anthemic as Dont Stop Believin or Lights, the songs that would make you famous. Another thing: I used to race bicycles when I was a kid, so I know about second wind and going into overdrive. I cant speak for them. You mentioned arguingwas there a lot of that? AD: In my solo, yeah. And we ended up making two more recordswe did Look Into the Future and then Next, and each record sold progressively less than the last one, but we attained a huger live audience, because we were playing live so much. On the next take, I know what should be happening. With most rims, if they get dented a little bit, the head will never seat right and you'll never be able to tune the drum. AD: I've always liked Max Roach. So, there are certain parts of the song which have to be played the same because they are part of the music. I didnt need any of the other affirmations. And I had always been a big fan of Jan Hammer, the keyboard player that was playing with John McLaughlin and Mahavishnu Orchestra, and was doing all the Miami Vice themes at that time, the music for the show. And the theory coming from Steve, and I kind of understood it, was that everybodyll go out and be able to express themselves musically in some other areas, and then when we reconvene, perhaps we will have discovered or found things that we can bring to the group to help the group evolve. But the greatest thing was, I really felt in my heart that Neal was happy to see me.
